How to Fix a Pixelated Logo and Keep the Background Transparent
Clients send tiny, pixelated logos all the time and expect you to use them on a website header or print banner. Here is how to fix them without asking for a vector file they probably do not have.
One of my first freelance web design clients sent me their logo as a 150 pixel wide JPEG. That was the only file they had. Their previous designer had it, they had a falling out, and now the only copy of the logo in existence was a compressed thumbnail from an old email signature. They wanted it in the header of their new website at about 400 pixels wide with a transparent background.
This is not unusual. Small businesses lose their original logo files constantly. The designer who made it five years ago is unreachable. The computer with the original files died. All that remains is a tiny pixelated version pulled from a PDF or screenshot. Here is how to salvage it.
Why logos are trickier than photos to fix
Photos have natural texture. Skin, fabric, grass, sky. If the AI slightly smooths or slightly adds detail, it looks natural because photos are supposed to have variation. Logos are the opposite. They have hard, deliberate edges. A letterform has a specific shape. A geometric mark has clean, mathematically precise curves. Any deviation from that precision reads as wrong.
Standard photo upscalers are bad at this. They look at the jagged edges of a pixelated logo and try to smooth them, but that smoothing turns sharp corners into rounded ones and straight lines into slightly wavy ones. The result looks cleaner at a glance but wrong when you actually look at it.
What works better is an upscaler trained on graphics and illustrations. Real-ESRGAN has a variant for digital art that preserves hard edges and flat colors. It treats pixelation as damage to be repaired rather than texture to be smoothed. For the 150 pixel logo I needed to fix, this made the difference between something usable and something that looked like it was drawn with a blunt crayon.
The step-by-step salvage process
Step one. Get the best source you can. If the client has the logo on their website, even if it is displayed small, the source file might be larger than what appears. Right click and open the image in a new tab. Check the actual dimensions. Sometimes a logo displayed at 200 pixels wide is actually a 600 or 800 pixel file being scaled down by the browser. Grab that larger version.
Step two. If the logo has a white background and you need it transparent, remove the background first with AI. Background removal costs 1 credit on ClarifyPix and takes about three seconds for a logo. The hard edges of logos make background removal unusually clean. The result should be near perfect.
Step three. Upscale the logo. Use 2x if the original is around half your target size, 4x if it is a quarter or less. For my 150 pixel logo going to a 400 pixel header, a 4x upscale to 600 pixels gave me room to work. Cost is 2 to 4 credits.
Step four. Review the edges at 200% zoom. Look for softened corners, wobbly lines, or color bleeding at the edges. Most AI upscalers get logos about 80% right. The remaining 20% usually needs a few minutes of manual cleanup with the eraser tool or a quick pass with the unsharp mask filter to tighten the edges back up.
Step five. If you need a transparent background, ensure you exported as PNG with the alpha channel intact. Re-check the edges against a dark background to make sure there is no white fringe. A white halo that is invisible on a white background becomes very visible on a dark website header.
What if the logo has text in it
Logos with text are the hardest to fix because letterforms have very specific proportions. If the AI slightly squashes or stretches part of a letter, it catches the eye immediately. For these, I upscale the logo to 2x, then overlay the original small version at 50% opacity and compare the letter shapes. If any letters look wrong, I manually adjust them using the original as reference.
If the font is identifiable, which it often is with common logo fonts, I just retype the text at the correct size and position. It takes five minutes and produces a perfect result. The logo mark gets AI upscaling. The text gets retyped. This combination produces the best quality restoration of a text heavy logo.
When none of this works
If the logo is below about 100 pixels wide and heavily pixelated, AI upscaling will produce something that looks cleaner but still not professional. At that point, the best option is to redraw the logo. Trace the shapes in Illustrator or Inkscape. Match the fonts. Rebuild it as a vector. This takes an hour or two of work but produces a perfect, infinitely scalable logo.
The 150 pixel JPEG logo I started with took about 45 minutes to fix. Background removal took three seconds. AI upscaling took eight seconds. The remaining 44 minutes were manual cleanup of edges and retyping the company name. The client was happy and I charged them for an hour of work. The tools did the heavy lifting. I did the precision work. That balance is about right for logo restoration.
If a client sends you a tiny pixelated logo, do not tell them you need a vector file they will never find. Fix it, bill them, and move on.
